Implants Q&A

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is one of the most common ways to fix a missing tooth. It prevents the structural disintegration of the surrounding teeth and bone that can occur when you lose a tooth.

An implant consists of a small titanium post that Dr. Ilyayev surgically implants into your jawbone and an artificial tooth or crown. The dental implant structure adapts to your bone and gums, becoming a part of your smile that looks and functions just like the rest of your teeth.

A dental implant is one of the safest and most restorative periodontal procedures for long-term dental health.

In some cases, you might need a sinus lift procedure before getting an implant. It's often necessary if you have insufficient bone in your upper jaw to support the implant.

What happens during my dental implant procedure?

The dental implant procedure usually happens in a few stages:

Implant

First, Dr. Ilyayev surgically places the implant post into your jawbone. As your implant heals, a process called osseointegration takes place, in which the bone grows around and secures the implant — the implant also strengthens the bone.

It typically takes several months before your jaw has fully healed and you can move on to the next stage of the implant process.

Artificial tooth fitting

The next step is for Dr. Ilyayev to create an artificial tooth that matches the size, color, and texture of your regular teeth. The tooth is custom-made, and this process may require more than one appointment.

Artificial tooth placement

Once your artificial tooth or crown is ready, you’ll come back to the office so Dr. Ilyayev can attach it to your implant. This is done by fixing an abutment to the implant post to secure the crown.

What results can I expect with dental implants?

After Dr. Ilyayev attaches your artificial tooth to the implant, you can expect to chew, speak, and use your mouth normally. The implant also blends in with the rest of your teeth, so no one will be able to tell the difference.

While the dental implant process takes time, it is one of the strongest and most effective tooth replacement options.
