How much toothpaste should I use?

teeth cleaning

I am a dentist practicing in Queens, New York. A common question I get asked from my patients when they come for their 6 month teeth cleaning visit is how much toothpaste to put on their toothbrush. The recommended amount of toothpaste to use is a pea size amount, as is illustrated in the pictures below.

  YES (pea size)

     NO (too much)

Brushing and flossing your teeth is a must have habit to keep your teeth healthy. It is also important to come to the dentist to get teeth cleanings twice a year. The best toothbrush to use when cleaning teeth is a soft bristle so you do not wear away enamel or the gums. Brush in a circular motion for 2 minutes, and rinse out the toothpaste. Make sure to reach all the surfaces of your teeth when brushing.
